How to Size an Ice Bath Chiller for a Cold Plunge Product Line

Most sizing mistakes happen before a purchase order exists. A brand picks a chiller from a catalogue photo, ships a container, and then discovers the unit holds temperature on a mild spring day but not in a Dubai summer, or that it keeps a 320 L tub at 3 °C comfortably but struggles with a 650 L tub in the same range.

The good news is that sizing is arithmetic, not guesswork. Four numbers decide the answer.

1. Water volume, not tub dimensions

Cooling load scales with the mass of water you have to hold at temperature, so the number that matters is litres, not the length of the tub. Our tub range runs from 320 L to 650 L depending on the model, which is roughly a two-to-one difference in cooling load between the smallest and the largest unit.

If you are building a product line, start by listing the tubs you intend to sell and their volumes. A supplier who quotes a chiller without asking for the volume is quoting a guess.

2. Ambient temperature is the hidden variable

A chiller does not cool water in isolation — it rejects heat into the room. A unit that holds 3 °C in a 22 °C indoor recovery room is working much harder on a 40 °C outdoor terrace. This is why the same tub can need a larger chiller in Arizona than in Oslo.

For distribution, this matters commercially: if you sell one configuration into different climates, expect support questions from the hotter markets. Sizing for the warmest market you serve is cheaper than handling replacements later.

3. Target temperature sets the floor, not the average

Our chillers reach 3 °C / 37.4 °F on the 0.3–0.8HP models and 0 °C / 32 °F from 1HP upwards. If your brand promises 3 °C to athletes, you need a unit that holds 3 °C under load — not a unit that touches it once and drifts up.

This is also where dual-tub products change the maths. The AC-2N1 is a 2-in-1 chiller and heater that runs two tubs at the same time, one cold and one warm, with a default setpoint window of 3–42 °C. A contrast-therapy offer needs one unit rather than two, which changes both your cost basis and your shipping plan.

4. Duty cycle decides the real requirement

A tub used twice a day and a tub used by fifty people a day are different products even when they hold the same volume. Frequent entry and exit adds heat continuously, and an open tub loses it faster than a covered one. Ask your end customer how the unit will actually be used before you recommend a model — it is the single most common reason a technically adequate chiller underperforms in the field.

How to read a specification sheet

SpecificationWhat it tells you
Horsepower (1/3HP to 8HP)The class of the compressor and the rough cooling band
Cooling capacity (W)How much heat the unit removes — compare this between models, not just HP
Minimum water temperatureThe coldest setpoint the unit will hold
Water flow rate (L/h)How quickly water moves through the circuit; low flow means slow recovery after use
FiltrationWhat keeps the water clear between services
Voltage and frequencyWhether the unit fits the market you are shipping to

Two units with the same horsepower can differ in cooling capacity and flow, so compare the actual figures rather than the HP badge.

What to send a supplier for a firm recommendation

  • Tub volume in litres (or the tub model)
  • Ambient temperature range of the destination market
  • Target water temperature you want to promise
  • Number of users or sessions per day
  • Voltage, frequency and plug type for the market
  • Expected order volume, so MOQ and lead time can be quoted together

With those six answers we size the unit, confirm MOQ and quote the configuration — sampling takes 7–15 days and production runs 25–45 days after the sample is approved.

Sizing is a supply decision, not only an engineering one

Every extra model in your range adds inventory, packaging and documentation. Many brands settle on two chillers: one for the volume that carries most of the range, and one larger unit for the flagship or commercial installations. Our chiller range is built so that a tub can also be paired with chillers from other suppliers, and our chillers work with other brands of tub, which gives you room to phase a range in without replacing everything at once.
